A very unique marketing campaign I came around is Mapvertising. As the name suggests it is a blend of map sites such as Google Maps , Virtual Earth, Yahoo Maps or MapQuest and the advertising campaign of a company. This is a concept of advertising on online maps, but also including rooftop and other large, physical ads positioned for satellite photo opportunities. This term came into use in 2006 when KFC became the first brand to be visible from outer space by unveiling 87,500 square-foot updated logo of its iconic founder, Colonel Sanders, in the Area 51 desert.
1. Coco Cola
Coco Cola is a very successful beverage brand which was founded on 29 January 1892. The brand is known to be a very creative with their advertising but they went a mile extra when they decided to create a Coco Cola logo that has a size of 120 by 400 Ft. It was created in 1986 using 70,000 bottles commemorating 100th anniversary of the brand. The logo was again updated in 2011 to celebrate 125th anniversary of the brand. The logo can be seen on a hillside to the south of the city of Arica. Although today we can term this as mapvertising but back in 1986 it was just a celebration of the brands 100th anniversary because satellites were not strong enough and there were no Google Maps.

2. KFC
KFC was the world’s first brand to be visible from outer space. The created the very first kind of mapvertising on November 14, 2006 when they unveiled 87,500 square foot logo. The very first image of the Colonel was captured by GeoEye's IKONOS satellite while orbiting 423 miles above the Earth. The then President of KFC Gregg Dedrick in an interview said that “If there are extraterrestrials in outer space, KFC wants to become their restaurant of choice. For now, we’ll be very content satisfying the entire human population with our Finger Lickin’ Good Chicken. If we hear back from a life form in space today – whether NASA astronauts or a signal from some life form on Mars – we’ll send up some Original Recipe Chicken”.
